This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
Children in each class have weekly music lessons between 30 and 60 minutes long throughout the academic year.
Our music curriculum follows the Sing Up scheme of work which has been carefully developed to provide a curriculum which encourages and supports singing and musical learning with children and young people so that they:
- Learn to sing well and enjoy singing
- Develop musical skills and understanding
- Experience the wider learning and developmental benefits that singing and music making provides
- Experience long-term benefits to their health and well-being
We believe that taking part in musical activity brings about positive benefits for all individuals. Singing specifically supports learning, personal and social development, promotes health and well-being and bonds communities of people like no other activity
Part B: Co-curricular music
This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.
Outside of lesson time, Talavera Infant School offers KS1 children the opportunity to take part in a singing and music club. This is free to children and run by teachers in the school with a passion for music and singing.
We have been fortunate to have a local music company perform to the children and offer local lessons outside school should children wish to learn an instrument.
Part C: Musical experiences
This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly and concerts and shows.
The children in Year R enjoy accessing music though play and also have plenty of opportunities to learn songs and rhymes. As children learn and explore making music and singing, they begin to develop their performance skills both individually and in groups. The playground stage provides an exciting area for children to sing, act and perform and is used by all children during break times.
Children in KS1 take part in singing assembly every week and really enjoy learning new songs and singing together. We have recently introduced a selection of songs with actions to provide a more inclusive experience for children who are non-verbal or have additional needs.
At Christmas, the children rehearse and perform a Christmas play for the parents to come and see. This provides the children with the opportunity to demonstrate the performance skills they have been learning in class and be part of something they can really be proud of.
We also take part in an annual Community Carol Concert and the Year 2 children are invited to learn a carol and perform at this wonderful event. This gives them an opportunity to develop their performance skills and show how proud they are to represent our school.
In the future
This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.
We are planning to use singing more consistently as a tool to support the children’s transition through the school. Following on from our ambition to use consistent visual support and language throughout the school, it is our aim to develop songs and singing to support daily routines.
We will endeavour to provide the children with exposure to high quality, live musical experiences in and out of school where possible.
We are also looking to explore further the significance of cultural music with our community. Our children and their families represent many cultural backgrounds and we would love to encourage opportunities for this to be shared in school.
