Year One Curriculum

Our Year 1 curriculum builds carefully on the strong foundations developed in the Early Years, supporting children as they grow in confidence, independence and readiness for more formal learning. We continue to place a strong emphasis on language, vocabulary and oracy, ensuring children have frequent opportunities to talk, explain, question and deepen their understanding across all areas of the curriculum.

Reading and phonics remain a key priority in Year 1. We follow Little Wandle as our phonics and reading scheme, ensuring that reading books are closely matched to each child’s developing knowledge and skills. This enables children to become confident, fluent readers who can apply their decoding skills effectively while also developing prosody and a growing understanding of what they read.

Writing is supported through a structured approach to handwriting using Kinetic Letters, helping children to develop correct letter formation, fine motor control and writing stamina. Alongside this, we use a mastery approach to mathematics to secure strong foundational knowledge, deepen understanding and build confidence in applying mathematical skills.

Alongside these core areas, children continue to access a broad and engaging curriculum that includes opportunities for learning across all subjects. Rich experiences, purposeful talk and meaningful contexts support children to develop their language and vocabulary, enabling them to make connections and express their ideas clearly.

Through a supportive and nurturing environment, our Year 1 curriculum ensures children are well prepared to continue their learning journey with confidence, curiosity and a love of learning.

In Year One this year we have been learning through the following topics:

  • Autumn 1 – Rhyme with Me
  • Autumn 2 –  Talavera by Night
  • Spring 1 –  Home Sweet Home
  • Spring 2 – Long Long Ago
  • Summer 1 – Food Glorious Food
  • Summer 2 – Commotion Under the Ocean

Please see a copy of our curriculum overviews for Year One. Further information about what the children will be learning in each topic will be provided in the half termly newsletter.
