Our Year 2 curriculum builds on the strong foundations developed in Key Stage 1, supporting children as they become increasingly fluent, independent and confident learners. At the start of the year, we review and secure children’s phonics knowledge before moving towards a greater focus on reading fluency and comprehension. We continue to use the Little Wandle approach to ensure consistency and support, enabling children to read with accuracy, expression and a deepening understanding of texts.

As phonics skills become embedded, reading lessons place increasing emphasis on developing fluency, prosody and comprehension. Children are encouraged to talk about what they read, explain their thinking and make connections, further strengthening their language and vocabulary.

In writing, we continue to implement a structured approach to handwriting, supporting children to develop automaticity so that they can focus on the content of their writing. There is a clear focus on spelling and the accurate application of phonics and spelling patterns within meaningful writing opportunities.

In mathematics, we follow a mastery approach, ensuring children have a secure understanding of number bonds and core number knowledge. Children are supported to apply this knowledge confidently through problem-solving and reasoning, using sentence stems to explain their thinking and deepen their mathematical understanding.

Our wider curriculum continues to be built around high-quality, engaging texts and themes that capture children’s interests and curiosity. These experiences support the development of subject-specific knowledge and skills across the foundation subjects, enabling children to think and work like historians, scientists, geographers and artists. Through rich language, purposeful talk and meaningful learning experiences, children build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for the next stage of their education.
